Spotlight on Solaris

Spotlight On: x64/x86 Certification Overview

I've been asked several questions related to Solaris 10 on the x62/x86 platform from administrators getting ready to take the certification exam. Be aware that to get certified on Solaris 10, you need to be knowledgeable on the x64/x86 version of Solaris as well as the SPARC version. This has never been a requirement on prior certification exams and may be a surprise to you if you did not study this topic. Many experienced system administrators have used Solaris on the SPARC platform, but never on the x64/x86 platform. For those of you not familiar with Solaris for the x64/x86 platform- it's Solaris on a PC. It looks and feels like Solaris, but the hardware platform is different. Therefore, startup, installation, and devices are a bit different on this flavor of Solaris. Readers going for the certification exams are asking:

1. Do the exams cover new x86 features in Solaris 10 1/06 such as GNU GRand Unified Bootloader - GRUB (the new bootloader)?

2. How are Solaris x86 device names different than device names on a Sun system?

3. The x86 memory requirements have changed in the Solaris 10 1/06 release. When asked to select the correct requirements for installing Solaris 10 on the x86 platform- which should I choose? The old (pre 1/06) requirements or the most current requirements?

Welcome to our September issue of eKnowlege! As this summer comes to a close, a whole new set of enhancements and modifications has been applied to the On-Line! Detective. This is an exciting time to share some of the changes we've made within the last 30 days.

For all of those who have sent us suggestions, we offer a resounding "Thank You!" It's our goal to provide the best information within three clicks of a mouse - and if that isn't possible, we've failed. Keep the comments coming!

Since our last issue, several of you have asked about bolstering our Sun/STK storage array coverage. Even though our primary focus is on Sun Workstations, Servers and the Solaris operating environment, we have started the groundwork to enhance this area. We now list every storage array, its corresponding part numbers and basic configuration information. Stay tuned for more updates.

This month marks the debut of our Sun Fire V890 coverage. The system has been updated in its entirety, including new Troubleshooting and FRU modules. We've also enhanced every system's landing page by adding links to Flash PROM patches, Sun Documents, and minimum operating system requirements.

Several areas have been tweaked within every system's left-hand menu. To start, the "Related Items" heading has been modified to include Device Mapping, Boot PROMs and System-wide Specifications. Within the Primary and Secondary Component headings, parts sections detail every X-Option and Kit, with hyperlinks to various 7-Digit FRUs (Field Replaceable Units) that make up their contents. Note that all column headings within the parts section may be clicked to change the sort order.

You'll also notice under the "Search" tab we've included an integrated 7-digit and X-Option search area, as well as a text-based search. Even though this section is readily available, we still recommend going to the specific system to meet your part finding needs. You'll find more detailed information on this topic in one of this month's featured videos: Parts Search.

I also invite you to join me for an hour long Lunch and Learn Webinar session on Wednesday, September 6th and 20th at 1 p.m. EST. I will be highlighting the On-Line! Detective's new features, discussing future enhancements and hosting a question and answer session. I look forward to seeing you there.

  • Question #1
Occasionally when I power on a workstation with a Sun monitor attached, it just sits there with a blank screen. I hear the fans running and the system status LEDs come on but nothing displays on the monitor. Where do I begin troubleshooting something like this?

    Answer:
If the Sun system console goes blank or video does not appear on the system console after POR (Power-On Reset), the most likely causes are:

    • bad monitor
    • bad video cable
    • bad video board
    • system has failed POST (Power-On Self-Test)
    • bad keyboard

    Question #2
What is OpenBoot Diagnostics and how do I use it?

    Answer:
OpenBoot Diagnostics is a menu-driven set of diagnostics residing in the Flash PROM. In addition to having POST (Power-On Self-Test), many systems also offer this set of low level user diagnostic tools that allow the user to run specific tests from the Forth ToolKit (ok prompt).
