We are very excited to present to you our
June software release. This is one of the
largest updates in terms of volume and the
breadth of content we have delivered.
Please take some time to look around the next
time you log in. Subtle changes have been
made to all sections and we think they will
significantly enhance your support
capabilities.
My "favorite" features of the the Detective
this month are the newly enhanced
"Administration" tab and the Documentation
section. Spend some time and look at these
features, I believe they may soon be your
"favorites" as well.
Thank you again for allowing us to serve
you.
Warm Regards,
Paul Violassi

It's all about the Network...
For many of you - this month's release will
be as welcome as rain in Atlanta. June may
as well be dubbed the month of the network
here at SoftTech. Under our newly
reorganized "Administration" tab, please take
a look under the Software Administration
heading in the Networking folder. Here you
will find more than 1,500 new pages of
information organized by topics and
subtopics. Don't forget - you can still
utilize the all-powerful SEARCH feature to
find the information you need.
New Systems
Full modules are now available for the Sun
Fire V60x, V65x, T1000 and T2000 servers.
Solaris 10 has many new and powerful features
that can be utilized by these new multithread
Niagara
servers. Some of the topics covered include:
• Predictive Self-Healing (PSH)
• ASR Database & Blacklisting
• Administrative Troubleshooting
Techniques
New Innovations
Configurations
For years we have represented a system and its
configuration rules and guidelines not from a
sales & marketing perspective, but rather a
troubleshooting and repair perspective. Take
a Sun Fire V880 for example - Sun sold them
with a minimum of two processors per
CPU/Memory Board, even though they will work
with a single processor. So, in the
configuration section we state that the Sun
Fire V880 will support a minimum of one CPU
and a maximum of eight CPUs.
We've now taken this level of detail down to
the most common peripheral boards that can be
installed in each system. Additional
information is now available for the types
and quantities of Peripheral Boards a system
can utilize. For instance, a Sun Fire E6900
has 32 PCI slots, but can only utilize four
Quad GigaSwift Ethernet UTP cards (501-6738)
per domain.
I/O Board Matrix
Have you ever wondered (or needed to know)
how many 501-7415 PCI networks adapters are
supported in the Sun Fire V1280? This
information can now be obtained three
different ways with the new "IO Matrix,"
which shows maximum quantities for commonly
used peripheral boards.
Click Peripheral Board from the left-hand
menu on any server's landing page. At the
top, next to the Slot Specifications, you
will discover Maximum Supported Quantities -
the link to the new matrix.
End of Service Life (EOSL)
We have received numerous requests lately to
publish the End of Service Life (EOSL) date,
in addition to End of Life (EOL) for the date
of manufacture for all of Sun's systems click
on a system and you will notice both the EOL
and EOSL dates on the system landing page.
We will continue to monitor and make changes
with these dates, for all current systems.

Question #1
I'm trying to upgrade my Sun Fire V1280 by
adding a 1500MHz UltraSPARC IV+ CPU/Memory
Board. But the system always hangs when it
engages the Power-On Self-Test (POST)
sequence during the booting process. My
original configuration included a single 1350
MHz UltraSPARC IV CPU/Memory Board. I've
tried a couple other 1500MHz UltraSPARC IV+
CPU/Memory Boards that we have around the lab
and they also failed during POST. How do I
troubleshoot this problem?
Answer:
Whenever adding a new component - especially
an upgraded item - ensure you have followed
all the required configuration rules and
guidelines for the system. You can find these
installation rules and guidelines in the
On-Line! Detective. For the scenario you're
experiencing, click on the "Servers" tab
within the top menu and then click on "Sun
Fire V1280" in the left-hand menu.

Question #2
I have a SCSI hard disk drive that is
inoperative. Unfortunately, we don't have a
data backup system and we need to retrieve
some critical information that is still on
the drive. We looked at sending the drive out
to have the data retrieved; however, the cost
is prohibitive. Do you have any "last ditch"
recommendations for retrieving data off a
defective disk drive?
Answer:
There are two different methods for
retrieving information off a failed hard disk
drive. The first is a non-destructive, and
the second is destructive. Try method one
first. If that does not produce any
satisfying results, try method two as a "last
ditch" effort.
